Netflix India Originals | Ultimate Guide

Netflix India Originals | Ultimate Guide

It was in the summer of 2017 that I had subscribed to Netflix in India. Back then I had a subscription plan with my telecom company which provided me with Netflix Subscription free of cost for a year. Local content available then on Netflix were very few. Most of my viewing time was spent between the iconic American Hit TV Series – Stranger Things, House of Cards, Black Mirror, Crown, Shark Tank and other popular series.

Over the last two years the scene has completely changed with dozens of new movies being added and local content being produced to keep the audience on the platform engaged. Love per Square Feet, Sacred Games, Selection Day, Bard of Blood, the short story anthology of Lust Stories, Ghost stories is changing the dynamics for Netflix in India.

If you are new to Netflix and are trying to find some great local content, You have come to the right forum for suggestion. We have for you the Ultimate Guide to get you hooked to Netflix with Netflix India Originals –

  1. Jamtara

Jamtara is a dark crime thriller based in the heartland of India where a bunch of young boys con people across India by posing as banking employees on the phone promising to provide reward points, trips to Goa or a new car in exchange of their card details and CVV number. This 10 part series have great story telling, realistic plot and superlative performance.

2. Little Things

Originally on YouTube and produced by Dice Media – Little Things has moved to Netflix sinnce season 2. Little Things is a romantic web series and chronicles the life of Dhruv and Kavya (two millennial’s coming from different cities and background and living together as a couple in Mumbai ) Dhruv and Kavya are Internet’s favorite couple and their stories resonate with people both in India and abroad.

One of the key reasons why Little Things was taken up by Netflix was for its International appeal. Dhruv Sehgal who is the Writer/ Actor on the show is phenomenal in story telling and has amazing dialogue writing skills. Season 3 is really the coming of age for the show and Dhruv as a writer. (More on that on a separate Blog). Little Things should definitely be on your List to watch on Netflix.

3. Bard of Blood

Now this one is special. Not only it boasts of an A-List Bollywood actor but also is produced by Red Chilies Entertainment owned by Shah Rukh Khan. What’s interesting about this show is how wonderfully it intertwines it’s story line with the Geo-political situation in Baluchistan. Again another master piece when it comes to story telling and capturing the essence of the region. Some fabulous performance from supporting cast like Sobhita Dhulipala and Kriti Kulhari.

4. Sacred Games

This one needs no Introduction. Saif Ali Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in pivotal roles. Anurag Kashyap and Vikram Motewane as Directors and a screen adaption from Vikram Chandra’s best selling Novel of the same name. It is a perfect recipe for success and it so proved out to be in the first season. While people still debate the ending for Season 2, it is still a must watch on Netflix.

5. Lust Stories & Ghost Stories

If you remember that in 2013, 4 Directors from Bollywood had united to create an anthology of short stories on a common theme. That movie was titled Love Stories and was directed by Bollywood’s famous directors – Anurag Kashyap, Dibakar Banerjee, Zoya Akhtar and Karan Johar.

The same directors are back again on Netflix with 2 special Netflix Originals – Lust Stories and Ghost Stories. You get to see 8 stories from 4 different film makers on 2 common themes. How’s that for a weekend fun??

Personally I love Zoya Akhtar and Anurag Kashyap’s narative in Lust Stories while I was blown away by Dibakar Banerjee’s definition of Horror and fear in Ghost Stories. Whether you are a fan of Horror or complicated relationships – these two movies are a must watch.

6. Selection Day

Two village boys lead by their Father’s deep desire to make their sons cricketer’s come to Mumbai and join a school which would help them get selected for the Mumbai Under 16 cricket team. What follows is the journey of these two brother’s (one of whom has more interest in science as compared to cricket) to the selection day. Parallel runs the story of Tommy Sir (Mahesh Manjerekar), a cricket coach hounded out by vested interest, Nellie Weinberg (Ratna Pathak Shah), owner and principal of a school which is dying out of funds and Anand Mehta (Akshay Oberoi), who dabbles in real estate deals while operating as a sports management agent.

7. Delhi Crimes

From a story telling perspective, this is probably Netflix’s best. It is real, it is captivating and at times it will shake your core. Based on the Nirbhaya case, Delhi Crime follows the Delhi Police investigation into the finding of the men who perpetrated this crime.

Netflix is making waves in India for more reasons than one. It is empowering writers, it is giving opportunity to directors to take on bold and risky subjects which may have been nonviable in theaters. More importantly it is giving the young Indian’s to view and get entertained by subjects which are earthy, real and truely engaging.
